Abstract
After reviewing the connections between people smuggling, people trafficking and undocumented migration, this chapter discusses the extent of undocumented migration to Australia, the employment of illegal workers in the sex industry, and the different categories of traffickers involved, including organised crime and the involvement of official corruption. The chapter also discusses the strategies used by law enforcement agencies to minimise undocumented migration, the relevant Australian legislation including Australia's response to child sex tourism, proposed reforms including legislation regarding slavery and sexual servitude, and the involvement by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) in the Global Programme Against Trafficking in Human Beings, with AIC research to focus particularly on the Philippines. An appendix lists relevant international documents, including treaties relating to illegal migration.
