Abstract
This paper, which was presented at the Security in Government Conference, 30 April - 2 May 2003, Canberra, explores different types of workplace violence and a framework for preventing this. Workplace violence types considered are: random public violence, which has now come to include terrorism; client intitiated violence; and violence within organisations, which includes violence committed by individuals who have, or have had, some form of employment relationship with the organisation. The framework for preventing workplace violence involves a risk identification process, including consideration of warning signs that may be exhibited by stressed employees; systematic risk assessment, including use of an incident investigation schedule; risk control measures; and monitoring and review. The paper also discusses the ways in which identity fraud can impact on workplace violence.
