Abstract

The Karraka Aboriginal Women Cultural Awareness Program is conducted as a five day camp which enables Aboriginal women to increase their understanding of their culture and to also look at their cultural identity. Karraka is an Aboriginal word for togetherness. Elders from the local community, custodial and non-custodial staff and the inmates work together on the program. These cultural awareness camps address the diversity of Aboriginal culture by working with different Aboriginal communities throughout New South Wales. Non-Indigenous women also attend these camps.
