Violence

Violence against individuals, whether through physical force or intimidation, can take many forms. It can be linked to drug and alcohol use, can occur in domestic situations, may erupt during robberies, and sometimes involves weapons. At its extreme, it results in sexual assault or homicide. Assaults make up the majority of recorded violent crimes, having increased by 55 per cent between 1996 and 2007. Violence of any sort costs individuals and the community dearly. The AIC examines key issues relating to violence in Australia to help inform public policy and community understanding.
