J V Barry Library
Library services
The Institute's J V Barry Library is a major criminal justice information service
that not only supports the information needs of the Institute research programs, but
also services key stakeholders and other clients. The Library also produces
CINCH, the Australian Criminology Database, an index of Australian criminal
justice subject matter.
The Library's online catalogue is now available as part of the Institute's website. The Institute's library management system is FIRST, developed by Optimus Prime Pty Ltd, a Melbourne-based firm.
Collection
The Library has a collection of English-language material with a strong Australian representation. There are approximately 25 000 monographs and 1440 current serials. The serials include journals, magazines, annual reports and other report series. In addition, there is a criminal justice statistics collection, which is organised by jurisdiction. Subjects covered by the collection include criminology, the social sciences, policing, corrections, and criminal justice. The Library's books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Loans and access
For people outside the Institute, loans should be organised as inter-library loans through local or agency libraries.
The J V Barry Library will continue to accept ALIA vouchers as payment for
interlibrary loans and document supply after 30 June 2000. Payment by cheque or
credit card will also be accepted. Libraries that have previously not
been charged for inter-library loans, will now be charged.
Schedule of payments for inter-library loan services
Please note: Restrictions apply for access to the Institute's building. High school, college and undergraduate students do not normally have access to the Library. Other questions on access to the Library should be directed to the Principal Librarian.
