Fraud booms in new technology

21 November 1996

Three types of fraud were highlighted in a report issued yesterday by the Australian Institute of Criminology as growth areas as we move toward the 21st century.

They are

  • Electronic funds transfer fraud
  • Fraud against the elderly
  • Fraud by government contractors.
The report, titled Fraud: An Overview of Current and Emerging Risks, investigates specific trends in fraud and concludes that control of these areas will be beyond the capacities of law enforcement agencies alone.

Anticipating a growth in computer literacy, the report also suggests that the number of prospective offenders in technological fraud will increase.
