Special Violence Prevention Award for PM

Media Release

30 October 1996

The Prime Minister, Mr Howard, has received today a special award for his work on the prevention of violence in Australia.

The selection panel of the Australian Violence Prevention Awards decided to mark the PM's work and recognise his leadership role in striving to make Australia a less violent society.

The award was presented by Dr Adam Graycar, who chairs the selection panel and who is also the Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology.

The Commonwealth Attorney-General, Daryl Williams, received a similar award at the ceremony.

The committee each year meets to decide on the apportioning of approximately $100,000 to programs which discourage violence in all its forms.

The VPA selection panel will announce its national winners for this period on December 4 this year in Canberra.
