Media Release

20 July 2000

The Australian Institute of Criminology today released a paper entitled Improving Environmental Performance, Preventing Environmental Crime.

The paper's authors, Dr Peter Grabosky and Frances Gant, highlight a number of constructive strategies to reduce the risk of harm to our environment.

Four basic approaches for the prevention of environmental harm are discussed. These approaches include:

  • information
  • self-regulatory activity by individual companies and industry associations
  • commercial influences and market forces
  • and the use of incentives and inducements for environmentally beneficial conduct.

Sixty-seven case studies which illustrate these approaches are provided.
