Abstract
Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA), which is coordinated by the Australian Institute of Criminology, collects illegal drug prevalence data on offenders and provides aggregate data to state law enforcement agencies, drug and alcohol services and other national agencies. DUMA collects data, through interview and urinalysis, on police detainees' use of six different classes of drugs at seven different Australian sites. This article summarises the way DUMA works; the areas focused on by the DUMA questionnaire; rates of heroin use at the different sites, 1999 to 2003; and who uses DUMA data.
