Abstract

The authors discuss the following crime prevention strategies: electronic article surveillance systems; integrity or "honesty" shopping; using computers to reduce theft; individual analysis of each department's needs; identifying shoplifters' targets; employing outside security experts; crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED); enhancing staff accountability; internal operational reviews and audits; and strategies for preventing fraudulent refunding. Case studies are used to illustrate the strategies.
