Abstract
The major crime problems affecting supermarkets are shoplifting and the theft of shopping trolleys. There are also occurrences of robberies and extortions involving tampered food. Crime prevention strategies include electronic article surveillance; closed circuit television; coin-returned shopping cart corrals; returned trolley rewards; securing of cigarettes; and shopping bag searches. Case studies illustrate some of the strategies in operation.
