Abstract

Situational crime prevention assumes the criminal is a rational decisionmaker who only goes ahead with crimes when the benefits outweigh the risks. To prevent crime, one removes the opportunity or changes the situation. This chapter discusses rational choice theory and situational crime prevention, explaining crime prevention strategies, environmental design solutions and community crime prevention. It also deals with the problem of crime displacement and how to address it.
