Abstract
Fare evasion, vandalism, graffiti and crimes against passengers cause major damage or cost to train, tram and underground transport systems. The following prevention strategies are suggested: the use of automatic fare collection systems; vandal proof design and materials; quick cleaning and repair; increased security; community education; reduction of loitering; redesign of station and trains; use of alarms; closed circuit television; human surveillance; and reduced services at night. Examples of successful strategies from around the world are presented.
