Abstract

This paper describes some examples of specific violence prevention interventions, which are based on the understanding that programs and policies can be targeted at individuals, relationships, communities and whole societies. The paper describes individual approaches, which include educational, social and therapeutic programs; relationship approaches, which include training in parenting, mentoring programs, family therapy, home visitation programs and training in relationship skills; community based efforts, including media based public education campaigns, physical modifications to the environment, activity programs for young people and community policing partnerships; and societal approaches, including legislative and judicial remedies, international treaties, policy changes to reduce poverty and inequality, efforts to change social and cultural norms, and reduced access to weapons.
