Abstract

This technical report sets out details of the assessments of the costs of crime in Australia reported in Trends and issues in crime and criminal justice paper no. 247, 'Counting the costs of crime in Australia', by Pat Mayhew. The report describes the crime costing principles used, compares the profile of crime in Australia with that of England and Wales, and describes some of the main studies drawn upon in costing Australian crime. The report then discusses in detail the costing of particular crimes, as well as the estimation of other costs, including costs of the criminal justice system, lost productivity of prisoners, victim assistance, the security industry and insurance administration.
