Abstract
This paper presents information on the deaths which occurred in police and prison custody during the twelve months to 30 June 1994, as well as summary data on the whole period since 1980. It defines deaths in custody; discusses the circumstances of deaths; presents demographic data; provides information on custodial status of people who died in custody; and comments on deaths since the Royal Commission. Deaths in this year were substantially higher than the previous three years. The increase was entirely among Aboriginal people, dying from poor health and heart disease.
