Abstract
Information on the deaths which occurred in police, prison and juvenile custody during the twelve months to 31 December 1994 is presented in this paper. In discussing the incidence and circumstances of deaths, it highlights themes relating to Aboriginal over representation; age and manner of death; offences and custodial status; and general trends since 1980. An appendix reproduces the Australasian Police Ministers' Council's consensus statement on the monitoring of deaths in custody.
