Abstract

In the period of thirty years after the Second World War, the New South Wales prison system was characterised by frequent brutal and corrupt management by prison authorities. The author describes some of the more extreme practices at Grafton Gaol and Bathurst Gaol. He describes the attempts to reform the system in the light of the recommendations of the Nagle Royal Commission.
