Abstract
How to deal with the violent offender has provoked emotive debate in Australia, as it has elsewhere. This publication reviews the basic issues which must be considered by authorities on behalf of society in response to an act of violence. It is apparent that some violent offenders can be rehabilitated and should not be imprisoned, but others are a very real risk to society and need to remain in prison for some time.
