Abstract

The convergence of computing and communications technologies has changed dramatically the nature of corporate life. The technologies that have provided so many benefits for corporations have, however, created enormous opportunities for criminals. Criminals are able to communicate with each other in secret, disguise their identities in order to avoid detection, and manipulate electronic payment systems to obtain funds illegally. They are also able to perpetrate crime on a much wider scale than in the past and target victims located anywhere in the world. This paper examines the risks associated with conducting corporate activities electronically and how best to prevent digital crime from taking place. Although legal responses to electronic crime must always remain a possibility in order to achieve general deterrence, the most effective solutions lie in risk management and crime prevention. Fortunately, both these are also able to make effective use of digital technologies.
