Abstract
The rapid expansion of the Internet has created increased opportunities for fraud. This article, which is based on a paper delivered at the Australian Federal Police Fraud Liaison Forum held in Canberra, 25 May 2000, discusses different types of Internet related crime and some solutions to these. Solutions involve a wide range of strategies extending from traditional crime control measures to novel technological remedies, and include public education about security risks on the Internet, user authentication technologies, Internet sweeps by consumer protection agencies, endorsement and certification of sites, value restrictions on Internet transactions, secure electronic payment systems, and legal reforms.
