This book is dedicated to working girls everywhere
In common with most research writers I owe a debt of gratitude to a number of
people who assisted me in various ways towards the completion of this book. I
would like to express my appreciation for the invaluable guidance given to me
by Drs Margaret Jolly and Nick Modjeska, who supervised the thesis which is the
basis of this book. I thank the staff of the Bureau of Crime Statistics and
Research in Sydney, the Library of the Law Society of New South Wales, and the
Library and Statistician's office of the New South Wales Police Department for
their readiness to assist. I would also like to express my gratitude to memebers
of PROS (Prostitutes' Rights Organisation for Sex Workers) for their support and
encouragement throughout. Many thanks are due to Gail Travis and Daniel Brezniak
for their invaluable assistance in reviewing drafts of this book. Finally, I am
greatly indebted to those women who took part in the interviews and survey, for
without them this book would not have been possible.
