Abstract
After giving some background information about the first national HIV/AIDS and Prisons Conference, Douglas describes the communique which was issued by the participants. The communique dealt with: the influence of HIV/AIDS in prisons on the wider community; the realities of prison life; prison sexuality; drug use in prison; education; detection and management of HIV positive prisoners; ex offenders; occupational health and safety; collection of epidemiological information; and the legal obligations of prison authorities.
