Abstract

The Footscray Council/Police Ethnic Unit aims to bridge the gap between people of non-English speaking backgrounds and the police, and resolve community problems. The activities of the Unit have enabled police to become part of the formal and informal networks which are established in the Fitzroy community, thereby assisting in the prevention and detection of crime. Byrne discusses the crime problems in Footscray; the strategies of the Unit; the benefits of these initiatives; and performance evaluation.
