Abstract
Sumner describes the conference as another step in building national consensus on the need to confront crime through both law enforcement and prevention. He alludes to different international approaches and discusses the United Nations' resolutions on preventing urban crime. He emphasises the importance of involving the community and developing organisational structures for crime prevention, highlighting South Australia's achievements in these areas. Of particular importance is the need to find a practical approach which works at both local and national levels.
