Abstract
George explores the important interrelationships between the experience of women in corrective institutions and the prison-like control of women in general society. She discusses sex roles; economic dependence; the types of offences women are punished for; the politics of language; violence against women; and the control of women's bodies. Problems faced by women in prison include sexual harassment; inadequate provision of rehabilitation, detoxification and medical services; and the denial of contact visits by inmates' children.
