Abstract
In opening this Symposium, Sumner addresses the content of the program, noting that it attempts to deal with the major theoretical and practical issues in victimology and confronts contending points of view. He stresses the need for victimologists to be able to compete in the world of ideas and subject their ideas and actions to public scrutiny. Proposals that emerge from research into victims must have a firm base and victimologists must be able to defend their position. For this reason, papers presented cover a vast array of views.
