Abstract
The Australian Institute of Criminology was commissioned by the State Rail Authority of NSW to research the causes of graffiti and vandalism, and to develop specific policies for the prevention or containment of these crimes in the transportation system. This brief summarises the key findings. It includes a categorisation of vandalism offences and a brief summary of the costs of both crimes. Its policy recommendations relate to: fast repair of vandalism and graffiti removal, community measures, information systems, and deterrent measures.
