Abstract
This paper examines trends in prison populations and imprisonment rates in Australia and its jurisdictions, during the 17 years from 1982 to 1998. The analysis aims to identify major trends in imprisonment during the period, as well as the factors underlying these trends. It points to significant differences between the States and demonstrates the value of long data sets to map changes and trends to better inform public policy.
