Abstract
The demographic structure of the Australian prison population has experienced some changes during the ten years between 1988 and 1998. The paper shows that while gender composition has remained stable, there have been increases in the median age across gender groups. Regarding country of birth, the results presented indicate that there are important differences in the structure of offences.
