Abstract

Many elderly people are unduly fearful about crime despite the fact that they are less likely to be victims of crime. James puts this matter into perspective, and also discusses the more covert phenomena of abuse and neglect of the elderly, at home and in institutions. She includes statistics on the elderly as victims of conventional crimes; identifies why older people are so fearful of crime; and discusses crime prevention and fear reduction strategies.
