Abstract
Between 1990 and 1997 the police shot 41 people whom they were attempting to detain. This report identifies patterns and trends across jurisdictions in the incidence of firearms-related deaths in custody. Dalton addresses the use of deadly force by police and then considers what other alternatives are available to police when confronted with an armed, agitated or suicidal offender.
