Abstract
In recent years there has been much discussion about trafficking in drugs and guns across the Torres Strait. This paper provides an overview of a seminar entitled Torres Strait : policing the open border. McFarlane includes some of the practical issues raised in discussion at the seminar, such as: the Torres Strait Treaty; the exercise of jurisdiction in the region; maritime activities; the security of Papua New Guinea; community policing; maintaining border control; and cross border cooperation.
