Abstract
Minor disputes can rapidly escalate into violent altercations, resulting in irreparable harm to the victim and great cost to the community. Disputants are often dissatisfied with litigation, and mediation is an alternative that has much to offer. Hazlehurst discusses alternative dispute resolution in relation to early intervention by police, minor criminal offences, victim restitution schemes, domestic intervention, family mediation, juveniles and first offenders. She includes contact details for agencies providing mediation services, organisations involved in commercial dispute resolution and mediation networks and resource centres.
