Project title:Out of Harms Reach: An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Different Levels of Treatment at Odyssey House
Project type:Developmental Crime Prevention
Researchers/contact:Professor Margaret Hamilton, The University of Melbourne
Commencement date:1990 ; Duration - 3 Years

Description of the study:This study looked at convictions and incarcerations outcomes for those involved in drug treatment at Melbourne's Odyssey House. Analyses provided by this project addressed the temporal association between drug use, criminal behaviour and treatment. Analyses compared the frequency of treatment with indices of criminal behaviour, which included self-report data, criminal convictions, and incarceration frequency.
Description of the outcomes:The evaluation showed that exposure to the Odyssey program radically reduced the likelihood of criminal involvement and it is recommended that therapeutic community approach be considered a viable alternative to imprisonment.
Evaluation:See description of outcomes which are based on a systematic impact evaluation.
