| Description of the study: | The Halls Creek Alcohol Action Advisory Committee is a group composed of representations from all sectors of the community. Projects undertaken by the committee include running the Salem Sobering Up Shelter, successfully applying to the Director of Liquor Licensing to have alcohol availability restricted in Halls Creek and being successful in a submission to fund a family outreach program. |
| Description of the outcomes: | The Sobering Up Shelter has been successful in diverting 82% of all police detentions for public drunkenness. In addition, moves made to restrict alcohol availability in Halls Creek have reduced the potential for prolonged and dangerous drinking behaviour. Comparisons of domestic violence incidences and injuries related to alcohol use pre and post restrictions show that there has been a decrease in both. Since the restrictions there has been a dramatic drop in the number of emergency evacuations by the Royal Flying Doctor. |
