| Description of the study: | In late 1990 the Tangentyre Council formed a volunteer group (led by Aboriginal ex-alcoholics who had undertaken courses in Alcohol Counselling and first aid) to provide community service over the Christmas/New Year period. Responsibilities included the regular patrol of Aboriginal town camps to minimise violence by communication, persuasion and other interventions. The patrols were so successful that support was gained from the communities, Police and ATSIC to make the patrols permanent. |
| Description of the outcomes: | Program outcomes included 1) establishing direct non-violent intervention techniques, 2) providing people with greater access to 'mainstream' services such as police, women's refuge, ambulance and counselling services via night patrol volunteers, 3) empowering community members to prevent violence through night patrol support e.g. creating atmospheres in which drinkers may be less inclined to commit violent acts. |
