| Description of the study: | The Richmond Community Safety Forum (RCSF) is a body of representatives from local police, community health centres, youth groups, neighbourhood watch, council and local members of parliament. The forum aimed to address any community safety issues raised in an integrated way by establishing networks and involving the community in the process. Safety was defined very broadly and included concerns such as fear of racial harassment. Main areas the project addressed were; licensed premises, racism and young people, council safety procedures, violence in the home and trying to increase street activity. |
| Description of the outcomes: | Some outcomes included establishing a forum for liquor licensees because of concerns re: violence in and around the licensed premises, were raised. This liquor licensee's forum was coordinated by Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Wood from Richmond CIB (RCSF member) and a project worker. In response to the concerns raised at the licensee's forum a statewide police-training course on responding to violence in the licensed premises was prepared. Another outcome example relates to racism concerns in Richmond primary and high schools. School staff in Richmond were approached and encouraged to include cultural awareness themes in their school curriculum. |
