| Description of the study: | The Cannington Fast Track Program targets youth who have dropped out of school prematurely. The program provides experiences for 'at risk' youth which hope to encourage a return to education, or enter into the workforce. The Mounted Police Equestrian program, the Cannington Club and Lockerbie Pastoral Company Tree Planting Project are examples of what is offered. |
| Description of the outcomes: | It has had a high success rate in producing positive changes and mobilising community action. Many young people who might otherwise have been engaged in anti-social activities have returned to school, enrolled in other training or found employment. In the first year, 93% of participants found places in mainstream education, training or employment. Of the 120 students who attended the program in 1992/93 60% returned to school to commence Year 11, 3% went on to tertiary qualifications with TAFE and 20% found employment in apprenticeships or workforce. |
| Evaluation: | Apart from an unpublished paper written by Lee Vernon (1998) for an MA by coursework at Murdoch University, this program has not been evaluated. |
