| Description of the study: | This project is a joint community policing and Youth Insearch Foundation initiative. Project Turnaround is an extension of the Youth Insearch concept, devised as a result of concerns about the fate of young offenders before the courts or already on the road to serious crime. Through the use of physical activities, teamwork, skill development workshops and basic living skills workshops, this project aims to provide the participant the opportunity to develop self-esteem, self reliance and network contacts as well as to prepare at risk youth for entry into the workforce. Another major component is to further develop police-youth relationships which can be transferred to policing practices. |
| Description of the outcomes: | The 1992 inauguration of Project Turnaround saw the participation of police volunteers from the Northern Territory Metropolitan Areas as well as from areas of Geraldton, Carnarvon, Northam and Kalgoorlie. Some 40 young people from these regions also attended voluntarily. The results of this program have been presented as a range of success stories of young persons who have attended this program. |
| Evaluation: | To date, an evaluation of this project has not been conducted but project Insearch is currently being evaluated (see note for this program). |
