Record 39: Going Steady - Steady Going

Project title:Going Steady - Steady Going
Project type:Developmental Crime Prevention
Researchers/contact:Ms Donna-Maree O'Connor
Commencement date:1992
Location:QLD
Funding body/institution:Australian Crime Prevention Award 1993
Description of the study:This project uses various mediums to educate students and parents re: methods of crime reduction and violence prevention which can be initiated at the local level. The Going Steady - Steady Going project is conducted in schools and has several complementary elements: 1) assessment of students attitudes to coercive sexual behaviour, 2) use of Preventing Abuse in Relationships (PAIR) video/study guide with these students, 3) parent discussion nights with the parents of students (when possible) to inform parents of the disturbing attitudes and develop strategies to address them. The aim of reducing/preventing violence occurs at two levels. Young girls are informed about indicators of dating violence and steps they can take to avoid harm and young boys are encouraged to rethink the disturbing 'rape supportive' attitudes many of them have in order to adopt more respectful ways of relating to girls.
Description of the outcomes:It has been noted by the program convenors that evaluating this program, through attitudinal change is difficult so program results appear to be only minimal.
Evaluation:The PAIR program was systematically evaluated (process and impact) during its pilot phase but has not undergone evaluation since.
