Description of the study:The St Vincent de Paul Family and Welfare Unit provide a group forum for men who are violent towards their partners and family. The program combines education and information sharing with therapeutic counselling, in an effort to minimise violent behaviour within the home. The group runs for 2.5 hours a week and is facilitated by a male psychologist with a background in marriage guidance, drug and alcohol programs, and a female social worker. The aim of the program is to stop men's violent and abusive behaviour via attitudinal change.
Description of the outcomes:The primary short-term objective of this program was to reduce the amount of physical and non-physical abuse that women experienced. In all cases this objective was achieved. All the partners of the men attending the group experienced a change in attitudinal behaviour and a reduction in domestic violence was reported. Time and consistency of attendance was a key factor in the success of this program.
Evaluation:Unknown.
