National police custody survey

  • AIC research project

Description

This survey, which stems from the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, is a monitoring program conducted periodically by the AIC. It involves the collaboration of all police jurisdictions across Australia. The 2007 survey is the fifth in the series and will be conducted during the month of August 2007. The aims of the survey are to identify:

  • how many people go into and out of police cells over the course of one month
  • why people are placed in police cells
  • the length of time that people are placed in police cells
  • the proportions of incidents involving Indigenous people
  • whether patterns of placement in cells and Indigenous involvement change over time.
