Criminal justice responses to sexual assault

  • AIC research project
  • Start date: May 2002 (complete)

Description

The AIC has been funded by the Office for Women since 2002 to conduct research in the area of sexual violence directed against women. Research previously conducted under this funding has included the underreporting and 'hidden' recording of sexual assault, an investigation of recidivism amongst sexual assault offenders, prosecutorial decision making in relation to sexual assault and a study of women's help-seeking decisions. The AIC has recently investigated the experiences and perceptions of women from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who have suffered sexual violence in Australia. The AIC is also extending the research by Lievore (2004) on sexual re-offending, to investigate the effectiveness of treatment programs and services for sex offenders. A third component of the current research is investigating trafficking of women for sexual purposes.
