Fraud against the Commonwealth monitoring program
- AIC research project
In October 2006 the Australian Institute of Criminology took responsibility for fraud reporting by Australian Government agencies as required by the Commonwealth Fraud Control Guidelines 2002 (the Guidelines).
As part of the responsibility for fraud reporting under the Guidelines, an online survey is conducted each year by the AIC. After presenting at the Fraud Liaison Forum and consulting with Technical Advisory Group members, the AIC has amended the annual survey. The 2007-08 survey has been revised to improve the overall clarity and layout of the questionnaire, and to provide more detailed information on incidents of fraud.
Significant changes to the survey include new categories of fraud types, and the separation of internal and external fraud offences against agencies. This will provide an opportunity for more in-depth analysis of the dataset and a greater understanding of the types of fraud incidents committed against the Commonwealth.
The online survey questionnaire will be available to agencies to complete on a secure website during August 2008. A copy of the questionnaire is available on this website for agencies to view prior to completing the online version. Agency heads and contact officers will be sent the required access information and a link to the secure website for the online survey questionnaire. Agencies are asked to complete the survey online rather than using a paper submission, except with the prior notification to the AIC. If agencies wish to make a paper submission, please contact Carolyn Budd, Research Assistant, on (02) 6260 9267.
The AIC would appreciate completion of the survey by Friday 29 August. The official deadline, however, remains 30 September.
Australian Government agencies with queries regarding the annual survey can contact cwlthfraud@aic.gov.au with any queries.
For technical assistance relating to the survey please contact Carolyn Budd, Research Assistant, on (02) 6260 9267.
Further information on fraud in the public sector is available in the fraud and corporate crime section of this website.
