Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE)

The Reintegrative Shaming Experiments project has been running in the Australian Capital Territory since 1995. It examines conferencing in Canberra, which is based on the "Wagga model" of police-run conferences. The study is being conducted by the Centre for Restorative Justice at the Australian National University.

Using an experimental research process which randomly assigns cases to a conference or a court hearing, RISE aims to compare the effectiveness of each procedure for certain kinds of offences, and will assess the effectiveness of conference and court processes for certain kinds of offences.

  • Recidivism patterns in the Canberra Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE) (final report)
    November 2000. This report presents the evidence available from Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE) about the effects of diversionary restorative justice conferences on repeat offending.
  • Progress reports
    These reports describe the progress made in the Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE). The aim of this study is to compare the effects of standard court processing with a diversionary conference for: Drink driving (over .08 blood alcohol content) at any age, Juvenile property offending with personal victims (under 18 years), Juvenile shoplifting offences detected by shop security staff (under 18 years) and Youth violent offences (under 30 years)
  • RISE working papers
    A series of reports published in 1997 on research in progress in RISE projects.
  • Policing domestic violence: the problem-solving paradigm
    The purpose of this paper, from two members of the RISE Project team, is to examine the current state and future directions of the problem-solving policing science of domestic violence. This is a more limited task than reviewing the entire science of domestic violence, since the focus is on hypotheses with immediate bearing on police efforts to prevent domestic violence.
