Deaths in juvenile detention, 1980-1992


This paper presents information on the deaths of young people in juvenile detention in Australia during the period from 1980 to 1992. A brief statistical overview is supplemented by case descriptions of the circumstances surrounding each of the 13 deaths, as well as discussion and implications for the prevention of deaths in juvenile detention and a reiteration of the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the Beijing Rules.
