Sets out the remand facilities needed in Victoria. Research revealed a remand centre with 200 to 240 beds would be appropriate, if the 1982 figure of 176 remandees is correct. If the remand rate increased to the same level currently found in New South Wales the new centre would require 450 to 500 beds. Suggested encouraging magistrates to use remand sparingly and the establishment of bail hostels for remandees. Three recommendations are made, these comprise the planning to improve personal records; approval for the planning of more bail hostels; and the planning of new remand centre on the basis of a maximum capacity of 240 male and female remandees.
