The impact of the heroin shortage: Additional research: Research summary

Abstract

Using data collected as part of a larger study of a heroin shortage which occurred in Australia in 2001, this research involved secondary analysis of databases and time series analysis. Researchers also conducted interviews with personnel from law enforcement and health agencies, as well as heroin users. This research examined the impact of the heroin shortage on initiation into heroin use and whether the associated increase in cocaine use led to an increase in violent crime and/or sex work. It also examined the impact of law enforcement operations on harm reduction. Included in this summary are the key findings of report and implications for police.

This research summary by Roger Nicholas provides a plain English summary and implications for police for Impact of the heroin shortage: Additional research (NDLERF monograph no. 19).
