Closing date for submissions for the 2024 Criminology Research Grants (CRG) extended to 25th July

The AIC encourages applications from organisations or collaborative teams with a demonstrated capacity to deliver high quality criminological research outcomes.

Applications will be assessed against the criteria prescribed in the approach to market advertised on AusTender. The following criteria may be considered when evaluating responses:

The AIC, in partnership with HEUNI, will be hosting an occasional webinar on Responsible Recruitment: How to prevent the exploitation of migrant workers at recruitment and placement, on 23 April via Microsoft Teams from 4:00pm-5:30pm AEST.

Focusing Pillar III of the Kyoto Declaration – “Promoting the Rule of Law”, this issue provides updates from PNI partner organisations. Also featured are highlights from the AIC's 50th anniversary and an article about the establishment of the Australian National Anti-Corruption Commission.

AIC releases new annual report on deaths in custody

Today we have released our Deaths in Custody in Australia 2022–23 report. From 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 there were 110 deaths in custody – 70 in prison custody and 40 in police custody or custody-related operations. In total, there were 31 Indigenous deaths and 79 non-Indigenous deaths in custody. The report contains detailed information on these deaths and compares the findings with longer term trends.

New study examines the support needs and barriers of victim-survivors of sexual exploitation in Australia

Today the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) released research exploring the support needs of victim-survivors of sexual exploitation in Australia, and the barriers that exist to support them. The report, undertaken in collaboration with Australian Red Cross and Project Respect, highlights the need for flexible and responsive service delivery to address the complex and varied needs of victim-survivors.
